Cycling Naked against oil dependence

Almost 1,500 people joined yesterday the seventh London World Naked Bike Ride in Hyde Park, the provocative protest organised against oil dependency and the car culture.

The number of protesters has increased constantly each year, touching its peak yesterday. The message is still the same as the World Naked Bike Ride spokesman said: “Oil dependency leads to pollution, global warning, war and stressful lifestyles. We believe it’s necessary to develop sustainable sources of energy and different transport choices.”

The ride started from Hyde Park, passing through Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square and London Bridge, and ending in Lower Thames in East London, covering a total of 15 miles.

People from all over the world and of different age and religion joined the event, cheering up in the streets of the city.

In an excited atmosphere the cyclists coloured their bodies with messages promoting their causes, wearing folkloristic masks, and offering a particular and original show.

For some of the participants it was not the first edition. As for Michael, 38, who said: ‘We face automobile traffic with our naked bodies as the best way of defending our dignity and exposing the dangers faced by cyclists and pedestrians, as well as the negative consequences we all face using non-renewable source of energy.’

The ride takes place every year in 24 countries in Europe, North and South America as well in Australia and New Zealand.
